Abstract
Diabetes mellitus
(DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistent hyperglycemia
resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. The
global prevalence of diabetes continues to rise, contributing substantially to
morbidity, disability, and healthcare costs. Chronic hyperglycemia leads to
multiple complications, including diabetic neuropathy, retinopathy,
nephropathy, cardiovascular disease, and musculoskeletal disorders, which
collectively impair physical function and quality of life. Physiotherapy and
Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) are integral components of comprehensive
diabetes management. Physiotherapy improves mobility, muscle strength, balance,
cardiovascular fitness, and functional independence, while MNT helps optimize
glycemic control, body composition, and metabolic health. This review examines
the role of physiotherapy and MNT in managing diabetes-related functional
impairments and highlights evidence-based interventions for improving patient
outcomes.
